What free care dental care can children access in New Zealand?
In New Zealand, most young people (under 18s) are entitled to free basic oral health services (subject to certain eligibility criteria).
Dental therapists in a school or community dental clinic in New Zealand provide dental care to children from the age of 0 to Year 8. Children should be enrolled as early as possible – most children are enrolled at birth, with the first visit scheduled between the first and second birthday.
How do I enrol my child for free dental care?
If your child isn’t enrolled already, just call 0800 TALK TEETH (0800 825 583).
What care is provided for teenagers?
Teenagers who are in grades nine through eighteen (excluding international students) are also entitled for complimentary dental care. The Ministry of Health is responsible for funding these dental treatments.
What dental services are free?
Common services include:
- Examinations
- X-rays
- Fillings
- Extractions
- Cleanings
- The application of fissure sealants
- Fluoride applications
A referral can be made if more specialised treatment is required.
Is my teenager’s accidental injury covered?

Are braces free?
No. Braces, other orthodontic procedures, and tooth whitening aren’t covered.
